Adulting – it’s the term we all use when there are chores to be done and responsibilities to uphold. But isn’t it boring!
As an adult, we spend 90% of our time attempting to please others. Whether it’s the boss, the tax man or the children. There is always something to be done and someone to please.
But just constantly focussing on the ‘must-be-done’ tasks pulls us away from doing things that fill us with joy and make life feel more fun, and most importantly – meaningful.
Ask anyone around you about the last time they did something completely silly, and you’re probably going to get a long pause and a comment about their holiday.
For some reason, we only feel ‘allowed’ to let go of our inhibitions when we’re in a foreign country. Perhaps it’s the alcohol, our sense of freedom, or the fact the sun is shining?
But putting weather aside, the fact is, all our responsibilities and chores are still there, they’re just not our focus.
Simply put, there is fun and joy to be found even right where you are, we just don’t see it as a priority.
Don’t wait for everything to be perfect before you decide to enjoy your life.
This idea of joy occurred to me this week while attempting to do a hand stand in yoga. I had such a laugh and so much fun in the class; I had forgotten what it was like to not worry about what I looked like or how it would turn out, and just have fun!
Most of the time we’re too busy trying to do things as they ‘should’ be done, putting extra stress and pressure on ourselves when there’s really no need to.
So this week, I challenge you to find joy in every single day. No matter how big or small it is.
To help, I’ve listed my joy list below, of all the things I love to do that make me feel joyful.
It’s time to release that inner child we’ve pushed back inside because joy isn’t just for children, it’s for adults too. And often we need it the most.
My Joy List;
- Wearing clashing clothes
- Playing on a swing
- Playing the piano
- Jumping in puddles or dry leaves (whichever is about)
- Making my soft drinks look fancy
- Getting creative; crafting or drawing
- Singing out loud in the car
- Dancing in the kitchen while cooking
Each day this week I’ll be posting on Instagram something that’s brought me joy, with the hashtag #7DaysofJoy – so join me!
If there’s something that puts a big silly smile on your face or makes you laugh out loud, share it below or tag me on Instagram @lizaboo_ponders.
