When I was recently invited along to a charity ball I knew within the very moment that I was asked out of everything I can pull together for a look that was worthy of Cinderella, my hair would be the element I would not be able to achieve without some professional help.
If you’re well acquainted with this blog you’ll know my trials and tribulations with my hair, a naturally curly arrangement that lacks everything princess worthy hair is made of. No volume, no thickness and no shine unless plied with product. And my skills do it no favour either, in fact I behold zero skills in the hair department, it’s up or down, take or it leave it, and on the rare occasion I’m feeling pretty sassy like I’ve got my sh*t together I may even attempt at some form of style.
But as we all know when creating a look, there can be no element untouched.
Knowing that my fat fingers could not give it that magic touch, I booked in with owner and head stylist Kai Wan at the Pkai Hair Salon in Hampton Peterborough.
I had visions of what I wanted, but in truth I just wanted anything that could transform me from feeling like a flat haired curly girl into a bouffant-ed princess who could take home Princes Charming.
So typically armed with a few pictures from Pinterest I explained my dilemma to Kai who could clearly see my locks needed his skill and creativity if this girl was ever going to get to the ball.
Loading my hair with a bucket full of product to help the blow-dry give the vavavoom required, I sat in awe watching this master hairdresser, curl, back-comb, sweep, swoop, and tease my hair into a style Mary Atoinette would be proud of.
Unleashing skills that I could only dream of, to say I was impressed by Kai’s expertise would be an understatement.
Where others before him have rolled my eyes and tried to kneel to my ridiculous hair whims, he was frank, confident and the first hairdresser I’ve ever come across who I felt like he just KNEW hair. Like a sixth sense.
What’s most refreshing is Kai’s obvious creativity. Whilst I sat there attempting to learn how I should be styling my hair I questioned Kai on his experience at London Fashion Week, working alongside other well known hairdressers and the stunning photography that captures your eye when you walk in every Pkai salon, all snapped by Kai himself.
I can’t believe I haven’t visited this hair genius before, and quite frankly shocked that I hadn’t heard of his elaborate portfolio either. Whether modest or simply just getting on with it, Peterborough is lucky to have such a gem in it’s midst.
As you can clearly tell from the pictures Kai succeed in giving me a style that was beautifully soft and bold all at the same time.
I’ve never before had the confidence to ask for an up-doo or have my hair just styled, (just in case I end up walking out of the salon looking like a wannabe bridesmaid). I believe there is true skill in creating a look with hair and one that’s rarely well achieved, but if you’re considering getting glammed up this party season and don’t want to attempt a Pinterest worthy hair style yourself, I would strongly recommend booking in with Kai and letting him work his magic.
If it can work on my lanky locks, it will most certainly work on yours!
